Masters of Illusion

We’ve been on a magic kick lately and after our recent Houdini post, we’ve decided to delve a little deeper…

Harry Houdini was amazing – what about all the other magicians throughout history? Masters of Illusion is currently on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA – some of our crew saw this exhibit along with the Houdini: Art and Magic exhibit.

This exhibit covers Jewish magicians throughout the Golden Age of magic (1875-1948). On display are multitudes of magic ephemera, beautifully colored lithographs and playbills, photographs, and artifacts - the real costumes and props used in shows by famous magicians, such as Alexander Herrmann (1844–1896), Albert "The Great Rameses" Marchinski (1876–1930), The Great Leon (1876–1951), Carl Ballantine (1917–2009) and even a few pieces from Harry Houdini (1874–1926), himself.

Just the sheer amount of pieces and the colorful displays transport you to the times of long ago, into the interesting lives of these mysterious magicians. You’ll encounter old radio and video clips of these people, too. Docent led tours are available at set times (and are included in the price of admission.) The museum gift shop has a wonderful array of magic books that include how-to’s on magic tricks, to biographies on magicians.

The exhibit will end January 8, 2012. General admission is $10, $7 for seniors and students, $5 children 2-12, Museum members and children under 2 are free. Also, Thursdays are free for all!

Houdini: Art and Magic

Recently the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA hosted the traveling exhibit, “Houdini: Art and Magic.” Some of our crew had a chance to see it firsthand – it was great!

Houdini was a magnificent escape artist, magician, as well as, actor & film producer. He had humble beginnings as a young immigrant and through hard work, innovation and marketing genius, built himself up to a wealthy international star. It’s one of those rags to riches stories that make people love Houdini even more.

Among some of his most legendary acts, the exhibit hosts a trunk from “Metamorphosis,” the milk can from “The Milk Can Escape,” and a replica (the original burned in a museum fire years ago) of the “Chinese Water Torture Cell,” and of course an assortment of handcuffs and a straightjacket.

Houdini dabbled in many areas. He was also the first man to successfully pilot a powered airplane over Australia. The most unsettling aspect of his life was that he died before his time – at the age of 52; not from an on-stage accident, but from a ruptured appendix, which he refused medical treatment for until it was too late.

You can find the traveling exhibit in the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA starting October 2, 2011 until January 16, 2012. For more information, visit the museum website, here.

Lobster Festival - Sept 16, 17, 18

Prepare yourself for the lobster invasion; next weekend lobsters are taking over the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro! Clear your calendar because for three days you can feast on the deliciousness that is lobster, listen to a great music from the huge band lineup, rub shoulders with pirates, check out the other entertainment and find that perfect souvenir or get your holiday shopping started at the vendor village!

Seafood not your thing? No worries - there are tons of other good eats! Ribs, tri-tip, chicken, Jamaican, Chinese, Thai and lots of other international foods and desserts are available! Check out all the dining options here.

Art Crawl Experience - TONIGHT!

An OC Weekly sponsored event, ACE Art Crawl Experience is an art tour that starts at one side of the Art District and ends at the other. Starting at Downtown Community Center Gallery at 250 Center Street down to Rothick Art Haus at 170 S. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim 92805.

Along the way there will be 6 galleries, an Indie Arts and Crafts Fair which will be showcasing local independent artists and designers. Showcasing their unique clothing for both men and women, accessories, housewares, pet items, crochet items, gourmet edibles, photography, jewelry, stationary and paper goods, vintage clothing and more.

There will also be a food truck alley, live painting, live music, performers, complimentary refreshments.
