Masters of Illusion

We’ve been on a magic kick lately and after our recent Houdini post, we’ve decided to delve a little deeper…

Harry Houdini was amazing – what about all the other magicians throughout history? Masters of Illusion is currently on exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA – some of our crew saw this exhibit along with the Houdini: Art and Magic exhibit.

This exhibit covers Jewish magicians throughout the Golden Age of magic (1875-1948). On display are multitudes of magic ephemera, beautifully colored lithographs and playbills, photographs, and artifacts - the real costumes and props used in shows by famous magicians, such as Alexander Herrmann (1844–1896), Albert "The Great Rameses" Marchinski (1876–1930), The Great Leon (1876–1951), Carl Ballantine (1917–2009) and even a few pieces from Harry Houdini (1874–1926), himself.

Just the sheer amount of pieces and the colorful displays transport you to the times of long ago, into the interesting lives of these mysterious magicians. You’ll encounter old radio and video clips of these people, too. Docent led tours are available at set times (and are included in the price of admission.) The museum gift shop has a wonderful array of magic books that include how-to’s on magic tricks, to biographies on magicians.

The exhibit will end January 8, 2012. General admission is $10, $7 for seniors and students, $5 children 2-12, Museum members and children under 2 are free. Also, Thursdays are free for all!

Houdini: Art and Magic

Recently the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA hosted the traveling exhibit, “Houdini: Art and Magic.” Some of our crew had a chance to see it firsthand – it was great!

Houdini was a magnificent escape artist, magician, as well as, actor & film producer. He had humble beginnings as a young immigrant and through hard work, innovation and marketing genius, built himself up to a wealthy international star. It’s one of those rags to riches stories that make people love Houdini even more.

Among some of his most legendary acts, the exhibit hosts a trunk from “Metamorphosis,” the milk can from “The Milk Can Escape,” and a replica (the original burned in a museum fire years ago) of the “Chinese Water Torture Cell,” and of course an assortment of handcuffs and a straightjacket.

Houdini dabbled in many areas. He was also the first man to successfully pilot a powered airplane over Australia. The most unsettling aspect of his life was that he died before his time – at the age of 52; not from an on-stage accident, but from a ruptured appendix, which he refused medical treatment for until it was too late.

A great book that covers Houdini’s life and has many photos and poster art is Houdini: Art and Magic by Brooke Kamin Rapaport. It can be found here.

You can find the traveling exhibit in the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, CA starting October 2, 2011 until January 16, 2012. For more information, visit the museum website, here.

An OC Weekly sponsored event, ACE Art Crawl Experience is an art tour that starts at one side of the Art District and ends at the other. Starting at Downtown Community Center Gallery at 250 Center Street down to Rothick Art Haus at 170 S. Harbor Blvd., Anaheim 92805.

Along the way there will be 6 galleries, an Indie Arts and Crafts Fair which will be showcasing local independent artists and designers. Broken In

We recently got a chance to check out one of our Holster Wallets that was broken in by a favorite, repeat customer. The wallet was used daily over the past six months and has conformed nicely to the contents it carries. The rugged stitching is still holding tight and we love the little wrinkles that have developed around the outer edge. The leather has taken on a beautiful patina and looks like a genuine heirloom.

Time Traveler Caught on Tape in Charlie Chaplin Footage

George Clark of the UK has discovered what he thinks could be a time traveler caught on tape. While watching the extras on his Charlie Chaplin DVD box set, Clark noticed something rather peculiar. In the 1928 film premier footage of the Chaplin film, The Circus, he saw what he thinks could only be a woman talking on a cell phone.

Some have claimed it could be an antique hearing device known as an Audiophone that would have been available at that time. But if it is an Audiophone, who is the woman having a conversation with?

The Pirate Motorcycle

At the recent Pirate Faire in Ojai, CA we were able to speak with Dan Brown, the creator of the Pirate Motorcycle. Dan transformed a '71 Sportster into a seafarer's dream bike.

This bike meets you head on with a mini cannon that doubles as the headlight and if that wasn't enough to frighten you from the start, there's a skull centered on the the handlebars which are actually two crossed swords.

Moving down the bike you'll find the gas tank is replaced with a barrel and Dan tells us there's a .5 gallon tank hidden inside.

Every inch of this bike has thoughtfully been themed. Dan ran custom metal work down the length of the cycle to look like sword blades, there are muskets in holsters on each side, metal bands hold rope for the wheel shrouds, a small lantern serves as the taillight, each wheel has wood panel covers and yes, that is actual bamboo on all the exhaust! We were told that the bamboo chars on the inside, but doesn't catch fire.

YoxView - Add beauty to your site with ease and affordability

I had been looking for a good way to display our product images on the site that didn't take away from the the overall experience. The way we had been showcasing our shirts was okay, but not completely adequate for what I wanted.

I knew of some picture viewers, such as LightBox 2.0, that you can install on your site to get a lovely 'pop-up' that allows you to scroll through your images, etc. I had fiddled with these in the past, but was never able to get them to work properly or they had browser limitations.

In my latest search I ran across a new image viewer called YoxView, and I must say, it is amazing! It looks great and is super easy to install. It even transforms itself to fit the size of the image. So, no matter landscape or portrait, big or small, it adjusts itself to fit and it does so with a cool, slick transition and super friendly set of viewing tools (it even has keyboard functions!).

One of the coolest things about YoxView, that I am hoping to take advantage of in the future, is the ability to place videos inside the viewer and even link external image sites, such as Flickr, etc. Oh, and it works cross-browser with almost no issues. Check out the full list of features.

The installation was pretty easy, but I did have one issue with the code that I downloaded. But after emailing the support page, I got a quick response and with that little adjustment I was in business!

So you'll know what to look out for when installing: there was an "_" that was missing in one line of code, in one of the pages that the viewer relies on to function.

The problem was in the file yoxview-init.js. The last line should be:
LoadScript(_yoxviewPath + "yoxview-nojquery.js");

Fistachio by Maiden Voyage Clothing Co. Pros: Lovely presentation, the T-Shirt was packaged in such a wonderful way that I had a great experience going through each layer of the boxing before I got to the actual shirt. Shirt comes packed in a little sack much like one you would find on any ship in the 1700’s, except it’s a bit miniature (so cool). The shirt was tagless and featured a screen printed neck label. A custom hangtag is included as well. The print is extremely large and super soft, as is the shirt itself (soft that is). Love the fact that they have a theme and stick with that theme from the website to the packaging to the shirt design. All around awesome in my opinion. Cons: The shirt is very slim fitting so if you like your shirts a bit on the loose side I’d suggest ordering a size up.

The Look of Atmospheric Survival

I wanted to share some really interesting items that I think you'll enjoy. They're all either antique breathing apparatuses or headgear/costumes inspired by such. Some of these I recently found and some of these I've seen floating around the internet for sometime. Either way they're all cool!

First up is an amazing suit made by Harrison Krix, of Volpin Props. He has re-created the Big Daddy costume from BioShock. I've never played the game, but after seeing this I simply must!

Next, we have what was certainly the inspiration for the BioShock character above. This suit was made by the Carmagnolle brothers' in 1882.

Out of the water and into the fire; we have an original 1896 firefighters protective headgear. Notice the whistle with leather squeeze bag on the front of the helmet. That was apparently used for communication signals during a fire.

Launch Party at The Edison

We just wanted to thank everyone for coming out to our recent launch party and showing your support! It was great to visit and celebrate with everyone!

The get together was held at The Edison in downtown Los Angeles; a renovated industrial space that has lots of history! We felt the setting was a perfect fit for our party.

Our Launch

Hello One and All! And welcome to our blog. With this being our very first post and with the recent launch of our website (Maiden Voyage Clothing Co.), we felt it fitting to share with you some beautiful antique photos of ship christenings and a little history to boot! (Photo links below)

The christening of a ship at launch is a very old tradition in which a ‘sacrifice’ is given in the hopes that it will bring the boat good luck during its journeys. I found the less noticeable and more recent traditions within christening worthy of note, as well. For example, the champagne (the modern day sacrifice) is kept warm so as to fizz more when the bottle breaks, the bottles are now wrapped in special net bags to help keep shards of glass from flying around, and bottles are now tied to the stern with a long lanyard. The practice of tying the lanyard from stern to bottle was the result of one woman losing her grip on a bottle during her swing and sending a bottle into a crowd of people, injuring one and ending in a lawsuit.
